One with a blue cover: The Fourth Passenger

Day 3: Of all blue book covers, my favorite is Mini Nair’s The Fourth Passenger. The cover image is a photograph taken in Mumbai by Suman Chakraborty, the novel’s publisher.

The story of The Fourth Passenger concerns four women in Mumbai whose friendship sustains them through violence and tragedy. A passage in the novel explains the meaning of the title:

The train seats were designed for three passengers to sit comfortably. But, at times—most of the time—the three crammed and adjusted to make place for a grateful fourth passenger, precariously balancing herself on the edge.
