A good excuse to buy an iPhone

By Robin Mizell

Late last night, I received an email message from the folks at PortableReading.com about their TextOnPhone service’s new collaboration with the International Thriller Writers (ITW) association to distribute ebooks on mobile devices. The TextOnPhone application is currently available with the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch and is expected to be adapted for other mobile devices very soon.

I’ve contemplated switching my phone service, because my ancient Motorola is in need of what will probably be an inordinately expensive new battery. TextOnPhone won’t be my only option if I want to add an ebook reader application, but I must admit I’m impressed with the company’s understanding of Web marketing. I don’t think Duke Dragovic will mind if I share with you the email announcement:

Hi Robin. I saw your post about free eBooks and wanted to let you know about a new venture I’m working on. It’s called TextOnPhone, and it’s a reading platform for mobile devices.

We have an announcement tomorrow (2/11/2008) at the O’Reilly TOC Conference in NYC.

  • 50,000 users on the iPhone and iPod Touch through organic growth (that’s with no advertising) since launching August 2007
  • A partnership with ITW to publish free works by their author members (includes James Patterson, Lee Child, etc.)
  • An application on Facebook to allow readers and aspiring authors to read, publish, and discuss

Here is the link to the press release. Around the end of February, we’ll be making more announcements including availability on a wider set of phones.

Thanks,
Duke

If you own an iPhone and have tried the TextOnPhone application, would you let me know what you think of it?
